LABS OUTLINE GEOL. 483.3, 2016/17, Term 1

SEISMOLOGY

Lab Instructor:

Yichuan Wang

Geol 135. Tel. 966-5731,  yichuan.wang@usask.ca

For data analysis parts of these labs, you will need to be familiar with:

  1. Matlab or Octave (for Windows or Linux; for a starter, here is a brief Matlab Primer),

  2. Optionally, other programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Perl, Python?), free seismic processing like Seismic UNIX, or PostScript packages like GMT.

  3. Vista (for Windows) or ProMAX (for Linux) for seismic processing.

The lab will be organized in the form of four "projects". These tasks are quite different in terms of time and effort, and so the the schedule below is only a suggestion. No points will be taken off until April 6; however, timely submission of reports will be appreciated.

For those doing the field school, results from both surface-wave (#3) and reflection (#4) exercises are counted as parts of the field school report. A more complete report is required  in this case (one report combining #3 and #4 labs), with tables of contents and figures, map, geological introduction, summary of the acquisition and processing steps, nice illustrations, interpretation and discussion of successes and problems.

Project reports are due on the dates shown below. Hardcopy or electronic (PDF) submission of reports is welcome.
